We all look in the mirror and see imperfections we wish weren’t there. If you’re struggling with a dull complexion, fine lines and wrinkles, uneven tone and texture or just an overall tired and aged appearance, you don’t have to deal with it. You can stop spending hours scouring facial products looking for the right combination to tackle your myriad of concerns. Call Aesthetic Surgical Arts/Mia Bella Donna Medspa in Overland Park, KS to discuss the benefits of dermablading.
What Is Dermablading?
Also known as dermablading, this cosmetic treatment is taking the industry by storm. It has become one of the most requested treatments in medspas all over the country. Why? First, it provides immediate and beautiful results. The process itself is unusual, satisfying and makes certain facial treatments you might get after more effective.
When you sit down for a dermablading treatment, our esthetician will use a surgical-grade scalpel held at a 45-degree angle to gently and expertly “scrape” away the layer of dull and dead skin cells just sitting on top of your complexion. This is the layer responsible for making your complexion look dull and lifeless. If you do an online search, you’ll see videos of people getting this done and being amazed at the number of cells that are removed. You’ll be amazed, too.
Dealing With Peach Fuzz
We all have hair growing on every single part of our bodies, minus the palms of our hands and the bottoms of our feet. We all have that thin layer of soft peach fuzz on our faces. It can be thicker and darker on some of us, and it can even make our hairline look like it extends further onto our face than it really does. These hairs may not even bother you, but they are hindering a few things on your complexion.
First, they’re hairs, so the oil on them picks up dirt and debris as you go about your day. Second, they are another layer of “stuff” your skincare products have to get through to do their job. Finally, they don’t absorb your makeup, but they do get in the way of it. You may find, especially as you get older, that your makeup doesn’t sit as well on your skin as it used to. Your peach fuzz may be getting in the way of it adhering to your skin the way it needs to.
A quick not–your peach fuzz will not grow back darker, thicker or in any way different than it was before treatment. Only hormones can do that.
An Old Hollywood Secret
While this may seem like a new beauty trend, it’s been a Hollywood secret for 60 years or more. Rumor has it Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor shaved their faces, understanding the beauty benefits of having a smooth face. We absolutely advise against doing this at home, however. Even if you’re using a kit specifically made for at-home dermablading, those kits cannot help you achieve the professional results we can, and you always risk cutting yourself.
There’s a big difference between what we do and just shaving your face. Our blade is specially cut to be precise and remove peach fuzz and dead skin at an angle that is least likely to disrupt and irritate the underlying skin. At home, you may end up with scratch marks and razor bumps and not the radiant skin you can get from us.
How Is This Different From Other Exfoliations?
This treatment is very gentle and uses no chemicals. It’s non-invasive and requires zero downtime, barely leaving any evidence of it having happened: except for the radiant, healthy glow and the unbelievable softness.
Other exfoliations or skin resurfacing treatments may address deeper layers of the skin, but they’ll leave a mark. Not a permanent one of course, but they don’t necessarily allow you to immediately go back to work with nobody being the wiser (except for the complexion envy everyone will feel). In short, this is painless, quick, provides a radiant glow and requires no downtime or any explanation of what has happened to your skin.
What It Does
You know it removes the top layer of dead skin cells and peach fuzz, but that triggers a reaction underneath your top layer of skin. Your body will increase its production of collagen and boost its regeneration of new and healthy skin cells. The results are noticeable and can include:
- Improvement in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- An evening of skin tone and texture
- Immediate smooth complexion
- Restored vibrancy
- Increased efficacy of your skincare products
- Improved performance of other facial treatments
As collagen is produced and new cells are turned over, your results will continue to improve over the next few days. The more often you have this treatment done, the better your cumulative results will be.
What to Expect
Here’s another amazing thing about this treatment: there’s no preparation. Obviously, you’ll need a consultation, because we want to make sure this treatment is the right fit for your areas of concern. Its mild nature makes it appropriate and well-tolerated by almost everybody. The exception would be anyone in the middle of an active acne breakout. Blackheads can be effectively treated, but those with whiteheads or cystic breakouts should wait until the skin calms down before coming in for treatment.
When you arrive, we’ll examine your skin to make sure it’s in the right condition to have treatment. You’ll relax in the treatment chair, where one of our estheticians will carefully and expertly scrape the blade across the surface of your skin. You’ll be able to see everything that’s removed as it comes off.
Post-Treatment
Once treatment is complete, that’s it. You’re free to go immediately back to your normal routine. You can apply makeup right after, but most people choose not to because their skin looks so great without it. You’ll want to make sure you’re always using sunscreen after treatment because you don’t have that layer of dull skin and peach fuzz to protect it from damage.
Results
The results are amazing and immediate. First, you’ll notice the glow your skin has now that the dull barrier of dead skin cells is gone. Next, you’ll notice how incredibly soft your skin is. You don’t have a layer of rough, dead skin cells or peach fuzz, caked with oil and debris, to mask your skin’s softness.
A bonus is how beautifully and easily makeup goes on. It blends perfectly and doesn’t settle into fine lines or wrinkles. The areas where peach fuzz was the most prevalent will now be areas where makeup is easily blended. Makeup comes off easily too, because you don’t have dead skin cells or peach fuzz holding on to it. This keeps your pores cleaner and your skin healthier.
Incorporating Skincare Products
Your skincare products will more easily soak in and be able to do their job after this treatment. You don’t have a dull barrier of skin cells blocking their penetration. Many of our clients realize it wasn’t their skincare product that wasn’t working: it was their skin preventing the products from working.
This is a great time to ask us about a skincare line to address your specific areas of concern and skin type. You’ll be amazed at the results your everyday skincare will bring now that you’ve had this treatment.
Complementary Treatments
We often recommend to our clients who are considering having other treatments, like facials and chemical peels, to get dermablading first. When you get rid of the dead skin cells and peach fuzz barrier, these other treatments are going to be better absorbed and be more effective.
Chemical Peels
If you’re looking to do a bit more resurfacing than is possible with dermaplaning, chemical peels may be the way to go. We’ll do a consultation with you to understand your areas of concern and the kinds of results you’d like to see. The wonderful thing about chemical peels is how versatile they are.
We can personalize each peel based on the condition of the skin and the signs of aging you’d like to treat. We have light, medium and deep peels to suit a variety of issues and skin types. We recommend getting a chemical peel after dermaplaning because the peels will better absorb into the skin and make more of an impact on your complexion.
How Do Chemical Peels Work?
A chemical peel is a skin resurfacing treatment that uses a chemical solution applied to the skin to remove the top layer or layers, depending on the strength used. Once the targeted layers have peeled or sloughed away, it reveals smoother and younger-looking skin. Each peel triggers your body’s natural healing process by kicking up the production of collagen.
When new collagen is formed, skin becomes stronger, thicker and smoother. The middle layer of our skin, the dermis, is packed tightly with fibrous collagen when we’re young. This forms a strong and solid foundation for the surface of our skin to lie on, making our complexions smooth, wrinkle-free and glowing.
Light Peels
These are considered superficial peels and will remove the very outer layer of skin. Remember: you’re already a step ahead if you’ve just had dermablading done, so you’ll be removing skin one layer deeper than if you were getting the peel by itself.
Clients can expect these to treat overall dullness, very fine lines, acne, uneven skin tone and dry patches. Results are immediate and will cause very little flaking. We can give you a recommended schedule of follow-up visits so you can enjoy seamless results. These can be done more often than the deeper peels, and you may be able to do them each time you have dermablading done.
Medium Peels
These heavier peels use glycolic or trichloroacetic acid and penetrate deeper into the middle layers of the skin, removing damaged skin cells further down. This will treat concerns like sun damage, age spots, fine lines, rough patches and uneven tone. These peels will cause more peeling but also a larger boost to the production of collagen.
As collagen production increases, fine lines fade even more and healthier skin cells regenerate, making skin brighter and smoother. These results will continue to improve for weeks or even months as the body creates new and healthier layers of skin.
Deep Peels
Trichloroacetic acid or phenol is applied to deeply penetrate the skin and remove damaged skin cells. These peels can tackle moderate lines and wrinkles, age spots, shallow scars and other moderate imperfections. Patients will see a dramatic improvement in the skin’s appearance as collagen production is significantly increased to repair the damaged layers of skin. The result is a dramatically younger-looking complexion with years of aging removed.
What to Expect
These peels can only be applied by Dr. Camarata or under his supervision. During our consultation, we’ll decide what the right course of treatment or combination of treatments is for your areas of concern and the results you’d like to achieve. If we decide one of our chemical peels is part of that treatment, we’ll have a few instructions for you to follow. The first is to stay out of the sun for at least a week before treatment. We can’t perform these peels on any skin that has a sunburn.
During Treatment
On the day of treatment, we’ll wash your face to eliminate any dirt, makeup or debris. We’ll then apply the desired, customized peel to your skin with cotton pads and wait the right amount of time to achieve the desired results.
We’ll be right next to you, monitoring your results, so you don’t need to have any anxiety about the peel process. When the time is up, we’ll neutralize the peel and remove the solution from your skin. We’ll then place a protective balm on your skin and sunscreen. We’ll send you home with specific instructions for how to care for your skin and make the most of your results.
Results
Once your skin has healed, you’ll notice an immediate brightness and vitality that wasn’t there before. As time progresses, depending on the depth of peel you had, your results will continue to improve. Your body will produce collagen, which will cause your skin’s texture, color and strength to improve. You’ll see an improvement in:
- Discoloration
- Sun damage
- Pigmented lesions
- Acne
- Melasma
- Mild acne scarring
- Large pores
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Hyperpigmentation
